JUGs... Just Unusual gifts is a family run business, with over 30 years experience.
Situated by Hove's main shopping Street is our 3000 sq ft shop, on two
floors. We keep in stock a huge range of furniture for all areas of the
house and plenty of accessories to give each room that finished look. We also have a great selection to choose from when trying to select that perfect gift for someone, and also sell gift vouchers.
Our furniture is imported from many countries worldwide, and we receive containers
direct to our shop on a regular basis. By bringing in a majority of our
furniture ourselves, we manage to keep our prices low, and therefore our
stock turnover high.
Most of our Indian furniture is sourced directly from the manufacturers in Jodhpur, India, giving us strong connections with the factory and the workers where it is produced. We visit regularly to ensure good working conditions for all. There is also healthcare provided to all staff for themselves and their families. Another positive within their company is that the owner is very social conscious and with profits made within the furniture making business his family established a school in jodhpur for providing education for 4 – 16 year olds.
Many of our products from Kenya, including the soapstone, are bought from a BAFTS accredited fair trade Importer. Their philosophy is to pay all producers a wage that is fair and reflects the quality and uniqueness of their work. The price paid means that all people who work in the production of a product are paid a good wage that allows them to live a good standard of living. They aim for all of our producers to enjoy more than a subsistence lifestyle. This company set up a Network in 2006, with the aim of this is to help all producer groups better their business, enabling them to grow simultaneously with the wholesalers business. They offer advice on administration and managing of their local business and how to break into sectors of the local market they may not have considered. The network enabled their producers to attend exhibitions together.
They also support community development projects financially, when possible, and by promoting the groups aims and requirements. They are committed to long term trading relationships with all their producers. They regularly advise on the UK trends and designs so that our producers can create new designs ensuring on-going business for them. The environment is very important to them.
Environmental awareness is evident through out all their process, from the materials their suppliers use to the packaging they use. They limit their use of airfreight where possible, aiming to ship in bulk once or twice a year by sea to reduce our carbon emissions.
Our main supplier of Indonesian products is a family run business who have very strong links with the countries from which they buy. They are responsible for all of their own buying and in doing so they can control who they buy from. When they buy they like to go to the workplace and see the conditions in which the employees are working - if they are not happy they simply do not do business. The majority of their suppliers are also small family based companies employing family members and, sometimes, other local village people. By buying in this way they ensure the fair price that they pay is channelled to the people who need it most.
They are also aware of protection of the environment and believe it is an important issue for all of us. All their products come from many different suppliers in and around Indonesia. Wherever possible they deal direct with craftsmen and women who use materials from renewable sources and fashion them with regard for the environment. The craftspeople we deal with are masters in their respective arts and we ensure that all monies go direct to them, their families and their employees and not to fat cat conglomerates. In some cases profits go towards improving the environment of these people, such as schooling for their children.
No Children are employed in any of their suppliers workshops.
